We got a feature for our game Pocket Cowboys a while back, and I was asked to produce the artwork that was needed. The feature graphic was actually printed as a wallpaper at the office of the developers :) The task was to draw inspiration from old western movie posters, preferably using silhuettes against a setting sun, casting long shadows. I chose to paint the fades in the background and the shadows by hand, to keep them more imperfect and vibrant. I had to keep it very simple due to time restraint and flexibility for feedback from the producer. The feature graphic was made in 4 different versions, one without guns, one with guns, one with a very extended background with some minor detail in it, and one using the game logo instead of the middle character. I will add as much "production" assets I can gather, but basically: quick paper layout draft, imported skinned characters in Maya and posed them, exported the characters and placed them in unity, screendump (!) and then Photoshop.
